IBM Websphere Application Server concepts: Fitting pieces together Table of Contents Introduction.............................................................................................................1Server......................................................................................................................1Node........................................................................................................................2Node group..............................................................................................................3ell..........................................................................................................................3!eplo #ent #anager..............................................................................................$Node Agent.............................................................................................................$luster.....................................................................................................................%&ro'le......................................................................................................................( Introduction  )his docu#ent provides in*or#ation about various Websphere Application Server+re*erred as WAS *ro# no, on- concepts. I personall *eel ,hen people start usingWAS initiall the don/t *eel co#*ortable due to various concepts and ter#inolog used b WAS. In this docu#ent0 I a# tr ing to 't these concepts one b one to thebig picture. urrent docu#ent covers Sever0 Node0 Node group0 ell0 Node agent0!eplo #ent Manager0 &ro'le and luster. Server Server is the progra# ,hich handles application operations0 user reuests andper*or#s various actions either as response to so#e user reuest0 or an internalevent ,ithin the server. WAS is available in various avors providing dierent*unctionalit as per organi4ation reuire#ent. 5ere ,e are not digging into variousWAS product available0 also #ost o* the discussion in this docu#ent uses WAS N!+Net,or6 !eplo #ent- as re*erence. WAS N! is the high end application server inWAS *a#il o* products0 it provides near7continuous availabilit 0 centrali4eddeplo #ent and centrali4ed #anage#ent. 1 | &age  Follo, ing i#age sho,s a WAS server.  Although, This image does not add any such beneft as o now, but in this document we aregoing to extend this image as we add more concepts o WAS. An application server description cannot be co#pleted ,ith covering container. Acontainer is b ,hich application server provides or e8poses underl ing services. Aserver has various containers providing dierent services. IBM WAS has variouscontainers such as Web0 9B0 SI&0 ;S<i to na#e a *e,. Follo, ing 'gure sho, scontainers ,ithin a server. For the purpose o* brevit 0 ,e ,ill not include these containers in subseuent'gures. 2 | &age  Node Node is not a running entit in WAS. Node is a repositor o* con'guration 'les+product 'les0 te#plate to create server etc.- using ,hich various servers can becreated. =ou can create dierent servers using dierent te#plate provided in thenode con'guration repositor . In belo, 'gure ,e added Node 7 As ou can see in above 'gure0 ou can have #ultiple nodes ,ithin an ;S b creating dierent pro'les but a node has its boundar ,hich is ;S. Node group A node group is a grouping o* si#ilar t pe o* nodes. B si#ilar t pe o* node I #eanhaving si#ilar *unctionalit in ter#s o* resources such as t pe o* ;S. Belo, is anupdated 'gure ,hich sho,s node groups. As ou can see node group can spansover ;S boundar and nor#all is the case. 3 | &age  As ou can see in above 'gure 2 dierent ;S nodes can/t belong to sa#e nodegroup. Cell A cell is a grouping o* node groups0 nodes and servers. It is not a running entit .Nor#all a cell is ,hat our co#plete deplo #ent is. It can contain an nu#ber o* nodes0 clusters0 servers etc. But0 in large deplo #ent ou can have #ore than onecell. Nor#all ou create #ore than one cell ,hen ou have applications ,hichreuire all together a separate #anage#ent0 securit and independent o* othercell/s deplo #ent.Belo, 'gure sho,s a single cell containing dierent ;S0 and servers. Deployment manager It is a special server used to #anage a co#plete cell. =ou use it ,hen ourdeplo #ent spans #ultiple nodes0 servers and ou need a single place to #anageall co#ponents and appl various *eatures to all co#ponents or selectiveco#ponents o* our deplo #ent. 4 | &age
