Population of wild game birds is very limited due to loss or disturbance of their natural habitat. My husband and I live in a small village in the Swiss Midlands near Bern. I was born in the UK and came to Switzerland as a small child with my parents in I have dual nationality having acquired Swiss citizenship. We have four Irish Setters (aged from 13 years to 9 months) and two cats. I have trialled two of my dogs (from show lines) and have now acquired a half work / half show bred youngster. Hunting with setters is not wide spread in this country and field trials are rare, limited to one lowland field trial in summer on released pheasants and a few days mountain trials in the summer in the extreme heights of the Grimsel mountain in the Valais and three days mountain trials in the south mountainous valleys of the Tessin, close to the Italian border. Let me tell you a bit about our country. Switzerland is a very small ( km2) with a large number of inhabitants (8 Mio. at present, of which 23 % have foreign nationality). Not all Swiss are rich and corrupt bankers! I d say the best things about Switzerland are the chocolates & the Alps! Few people realise that there are four official languages spoken in our country: Swiss-German (similar to German), French, Italian and Romansh (in the eastern mountain region). Most think of Switzerland as a cold country with mountains & snow, but actually our summers can be really hot and humid with maximum temperatures of around C. What is lacking in the lowlands is room for nature. The intensive agriculture in the lowlands and the ever expanding urban agglomeration has ruined much natural habitat for wildlife. Switzerland is a country of many rules with one of the strictest animal protection laws. We are one of the few countries were every dog owner is obliged to visit a special theoretical and practical training course with each new dog he/she acquires and all dogs are micro chipped and registered in a central database. Sadly there is not much free running for dogs - and in recent years with new dog owner restrictions this has got worse. Training Partridge have all but disappeared with only a small protected number (estimate of breeding pairs). There are some quail but they too do not find an ideal living environment. Snipe are extremely rare and close to extinction and numbers of woodcock are low and considered vulnerable. Alpine areas make up 60% of Switzerland s surface and it is here that game birds like Rock Ptarmigan, Black Grouse and Capercaillie are found. They are all considered vulnerable species with the ptarmigan especially being adversely affected by the warmer climate of recent years. There are strict rules as to how many birds may be shot, for example in the canton Graubunden a hunter may only shoot 10 ptarmigan and one black grouse during the shooting season (1st October 30th November). Hunting of chamois, roe deer and red deer is far more widespread and the preferred breed of dog is the kind suitable for this kind of hunting. The multi-tasking breeds like the German Pointer and the Wachtelhund are widespread, as are the track scenting dogs like the Laufhund (slightly similar to a Beagle). The Irish Setter population in Switzerland has changed enormously over the last 30 years. The breed is usually kept as family dog rather than hunting companion. In the 1980s Irish Setters were very fashionable dogs with unscrupulous breeders producing puppies for ignorant buyers wanting a stunningly beautiful dog but with no idea of their high energy level. The highest number of official registrations was in 1982 with 315 Irish Setters being registered with the Swiss Kennel Club. By 1990 registrations had dropped to a third. Numbers have continued to decline reaching an all-time low in 2011 with just 15 pups from two litters being registered. Sadly, today many people are convinced the breed is highly strung & nervous and can t be trained. In Switzerland, two breeders have continued to be active in the breed over the past 20 years: Béatrice Nauer with the of Santana affix and Suzanne Perret with the de la Raverette affix. I am not a frequent breeder having bred my last litter in All present breeders have show bred stock, none breed from working lines. Despite that, Switzerland can proudly declare to owning the most successful Irish! At the Setter & Pointer trials in France, the prestigious Open de France Grand Quête was won by the French bred and Swiss owned Four Roses du Pied du Mont! This 3 year old bitch is owned by Serge Reymond (himself a field trial judge) and was handled by Emanuel Bourgeois from France. Another very successful Irish of recent years is Cooper du Pied du Mont owned by Swiss Guido Orsan. Both these dogs were bred by M. Fusilier and are sired by the famous French dog Urtis de la Chaume Rigault. Jean-Pierre Monnerat is also a Swiss field trial judge who owns Irish Setters from French working lines. Many of these dogs are sent to France or Italy for their training and are often handled by professional handlers at the important French trials. 35 A Swiss view Alsace setter competing in Autumn field trial In 2011 only two litters were registered in Switzerland. This was an all-time low. Fortunately a few new faces have appeared and we can hope that new interest and new breeders will be starting. Prior to breeding, all dogs need full health clearance with mandatory hip scoring and DNA-testing for CLAD and PRA. Dogs with a hip score of worse than a C (in GB terms equivalent to a total of 15) are not passed for breeding. Many breeders also have their dogs elbows x-rayed at the same time. In 2012 five litters or Irish were registered with 47 pups. Entries at dog shows are low with 8 to 16 Irish per show. We have quite a few dogs in all four setter breeds with dual purpose abilities and a few dedicated owners & breeders who enjoy training their dogs for the field with reasonable success. There is no training on live game in Switzerland so anyone with an interest in working their setter must travel to France or Germany or send their dog away to be trained (and handled). It takes a lot of dedication and some finance whichever choice you make. Top Irish Setter in Switzerland in recent years at shows and trials would be my own dog Glen Int. Swiss & German Champion Coppersheen Coalville Lad, born in 2005, by Anlory Muscavado (a dog from old GB show lines with tremendous energy and a outgoing temperament) out of my own Int. Ch. Northern Light vh Aderlaarsvaren (who gained a field trial award). Glen is also trained as a Search & Rescue Dog, though he prefers hunting. Not a very fast dog he is keen and thorough and earned the praise of Swiss field trial judge Andreas Rogger who says you could always rely on Glen to find game when others did not! Glen gained eight field trial awards including two CoM s at Novice field trials on Grouse in the UK. He is now close to retirement. In autumn 2012 I acquired a puppy bitch from a mating between working and show lines. This puppy is Corradeelish Sionnach (by Int FT Ch Ballydavid Airforce ex Clannrua Comeragh) and I have high hopes for her in the future. It is only in recent years due to open travel to UK that I have had the great opportunity of taking my setters training on the grouse moors of England and Scotland. This is something my husband and I greatly enjoy. It is a great thrill to see the dogs working the heather doing the job they were bred for. This has given me a new sight on the breed and I can appreciate both the working qualities of the field bred dogs as well as enjoying the conformation of a good show type Irish Setter. Susan Stone Amport Thörigen, Spring 2013 Alsace Pheasant Pointing a Pheasant 36 Irish Red Setters in Germany 2012 Talking about the Field Trial scene in Germany 2012, it was the year of two new GERMAN HUNTING CHAMPIONS, as LOHMANN S MILAN and Canadian import RUSSELL S KISMET finished their points on spring Field Trials at Berlin in spring! Russell s Kismet was also entered on Russell s Kismet show grounds in Turkey and is now the first Irish Setter who gained TURKISH CHAMPION title along with his german show champion title. The attention that was paid by Turkish media and the total dog hype was a story worth telling. Until now Turkey has a VERY keen group of hunters with ES, P and GSP. Hopefully some good working Irish Setters will be seen there soon! The rare title of an INTERNATIONAL FIELD TRIAL CHAMPION (CHIT) was awarded to LOHMANN S ODWAGA, who also added a SWISS WORKING CHAMPION to her name. This bitch started also in France and came home with 1st Exc/CACT and 3rd Exc. on Spring Field Trials. It was very nice to hear that also German bred and Danish owner/handled Int.FT.Ch LOHMANN S JAFFA did a short trip to French Field Trial scene in spring and immediately scored a Tres Bon! The combination of DUAL CHAMPION Russell s Kismet and INT.FT.Ch. Lohmann s Odwaga gave us the A-litter von den Wiesenstrolchen and it was ANDY VON DEN WIESENSTROLCHEN, who won Bavarian junior trial and also gained 2nd TB of FT and 3rd TB on Gibier Tire in France at 18 months of age. Fantastic results for such a young dog. Out of Frau Meier vom Gebirgsjägerhof we saw ALI, AKIRA & ANKA VOM DIEMANTSTEIN on many junior trials and versatile trials in spring and autumn successful and especially Anka had a very sound performance and finally a trialwin on HZP. Out of Lohmann s Heidi it were LOHMANN S TESSA & TORA, who competed at open gundogs trials VJP, HZP and VGP in competition with continentals and came home with outstanding results on spring and autumn trials. Tessa won the VJP with 75 points, got 178 p. on HZP and mastered 290 p./iii. Price on VGP, while her litter sister Tora got 63 p. on VJP and strong 182 points on HZP. Out of FTCh Lohmann s Lawine it was LOHMANN S SHARI owned and handled by kennel Osterpforte, who after some good results in junior class got highly recommendation by president of German ESC Nina Wollmann and scored VG 14 p. on Gibier Tire. Shari pictured below Out of CIB Coppersheen Dancing Light it was Irish Farfarello s Joy, who was successful on spring and autumn junior trials. Lohmann s Shari And last but not least on the big versatile two days trial VGP, it was FIGHTING IRISH JOYCE out of Darlene from the old Irish cottage, who achieved 322 points/ii price. This prestigious trial combines field, water, retrieve and wood subjects and is so called mastership trial for all round gundogs. These VGP trials are a great demonstration for hunters and it shows, that IS are also able to do a good job in all sorts of tasks. Dogs that pass this trial successful are listed in the big annual book of JGHV with a running number. Twenty years ago we had 2-3 Irish Setter entered in this book with low points. But what happened this year is amazing! FIGHTING IRISH IT S MY LIFE 336 points/ I. price trial winner FIGHTING IRISH INFINITY GENESIS 321 points/ I. price The offsprings of German Hunting Cham. Lohmann s Milan out of Lohmann s Krambambuli followed the tracks of their parents and gained WENZL S ASKABAN MASTER OF DESASTER 343/ I. price, while his littersister WENZL S AVALON MASTER OF DESASTER won the HZP autumn trial Another young bitch that did well in 2012 was LOHMANN S RIEKE by Lohmann s Klavinius out of German working Champion Lohmann s Lawine. She got 1st and 2nd price on spring trials and a strong second price on autumn trial as well as a VGP with 308 points /III.price. Must have been the first time that an Irish Setter was followed by American judges on blood track. Lohmann s Tessa & Tora 37 Irish Red Setters in Germany 2012 The big German Easter Field trials in spring held by Gordon Setters and English Setter club had several Irish Setter on start and it was French import German Hunting and Field Trial Champion VESPER DU VAL DE LOUE, who won FT couple class one day, runner-up German Hunting Champion LOHMANN S MILAN. Vesper s dutch bred daughter PALLAS GREEN JENTL out of Pallas Green Gina had a great season as well, winning CACT in Germany and France on Field Trial solo. Another daughter CINDY VOM KAPELLENPFAD out of Quicky of O Deherty s Keep (daughter of FTCh Lohmann s Dietze) got VG 15 points on FT solo and also added a nice versatile HZP trial with 186 points in autumn to her list. Also imported from France we saw ECSTASY DU GOURG D ENFER in great shape and she won two trials in Switzerland with CACIT. Armani Another very sound dog in 2012 was Austrian import OUR ONLY ORLANDO VOM FRANZOSENKELLER, who has a well mixed up pedigree of show and working lines. His keen handler handled him not only to a GOOD placement on the big summer event of the year, but also to a second and third price on FT solo and two first prices and one second price on Gibier Tire Trials. Last year we had two promising youngsters and they kept their form. AYLA VOM WESTMÜNSTERLAND won Int. Derby with Excellent 17 points and added a win at HZP with 185 points, while her litter brother ARMANI VOM WESTMÜNSTERLAND got ID Exc 16 points, HZP 186 points, Gibier Tire solo exc 18 points and FT solo VG 15 points. They are from Nero von Royal x Youtoo vom Westmünsterland. the European Championship for IS in spring in France with ECSTASY DU GOURG D ENFER, PALLAS GREEN JENTL, VESPER DU VAL DE LOUE and LOHMANN S ODWAGA had no placements, we had another really big event this time in Germany! First time all four clubs (P, ES, GS and IS) and organization for Pointers and Setters arranged a trial together and Participants came not only from Germany, but also from Austria, Switzerland and France. Judging was done under the FCI rules for Gibier Tire solo and couple. Some of the finest pointers and setters in the fields and it was a highlight when wellknown judge Luca Bortoli stated after 3 days Trials, that the quality of the dogs was outstanding and especially the IS did impress him! The results in GT solo was a win with VG 14 points for LUKE VON USENBORN (Sam of Wildfire Lohmann s Elfriede), second day a 2nd VG 12 points for OUR ONLY ORLANDO VOM FRANZOSENKELLER. In GT couple it was 3rd GOOD 9 points for ECSTASY du GOURG D ENFER on second day and finally best performance of the whole competition: Best Regards from Germany Christiane Lohmann 38 Irish Setter Show Results 2012 St Patrick s Celtic Winners Ch Show March 17th Judge; Mrs R.
