  Pulley  - a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load. It can change the direction of force and make movement easier. Pulleys can be set up in multiple ways: Fixed Pulley  A fixed pulley stays in one spot and is attached to a structure.  As the rope is pulled down, the load moves up. Does not have mechanical advantage. (Example: It would take 50N effort to lift a 50N object) Examples: wells, clotheslines, flagpoles, window blinds, and elevators.  Moveable Pulley  A moveable pulley is a pulley that can change position relative to the structure. It makes movement easier because as the load is being pulled up the rope is being pulled in the same direction. Has mechanical advantage. (Example: It would take 25N effort to lift a 50N object) Example: Weightlifting machine Combined Pulley (Pulley System)  A pulley system is when you combine two or more pulleys. Examples: Cranes and bike hoist  Has mechanical advantage. (Example: It would take 25N effort to lift a 50N object) Important Concepts: Load - refers to the object being lifted Force - refers to the strength or energy that a person applies in order to move a load Mechanical Advantage - the factor by which a machine, in this case a pulley, multiplies the force put into it. This means that the pulley can lift the object with a greater amount of force than what we have to apply to the rope. This makes lifting heavy objects easier  to complete.
