I love words and language and prose. When I am not able to find the right turn of phrase, I turn to the words of others. This week, I would like to share a quote I heard when I was visiting another elementary school on Monday. It made me realize, again, how lucky I am to be part of a school community like TCKS. I heard a little girl, I believe she was probably seven or eight, talking to her little sister, who appeared to be three or four. The older sister said, That s the principal s office. You only go there if you re in big trouble. The younger child gazed at her sister with wide eyes, and a look that said, I don t EVER want to go there! The older sister just nodded sagely, and they walked away down the hall, following their mom. At first, I had to chuckle and the sincerity of both the girls response to the scary principal s office. But then I also started to feel a little bit sad. I do think that the role of principal is somewhat contradictory. I act as a director of State and District policy, but I am also a champion for change and progress. I am called upon to protect bureaucratic tradition, while also pressing against traditional thought Traut would not even exist if not for a rally against tradition! I am a supervisor, figurehead, and (according to some 7-year-olds) prison guard for naughty students. But to be honest with you, at my heart, I am responsible for student learning; I am a teacher. My daughter corrected me the other day when we were meeting new friends. When asked what I do for a living, I immediately said, I m an Elementary School Teacher! Ava, never one to let a half-truth go uncorrected, said, No you re not! You re a principal! I blushed and had to agree, I am a principal. But I will always be a teacher at heart. See Principal, Page 2 Page 2 Traut Core Kn owled ge Sch ool Newsletter April 7, 2017 Principal, cont d. At Traut, I do occasionally meet with a student to talk about how their choices and behaviors impact their peers and their learning. But that is such a tiny portion of my work. I also get to meet with students to celebrate victories, like the Odyssey of the Minds awards that our students earned last weekend. I get to meet with Student Advisory Board members to decide what we want our Spirit Days to look like. I get to coach students as they prepare for the Learning Expo. THIS is the work that I love to do. Every bit of it even the helping students who made poor choices. I do hope that students have a respect for the titular power of The Principal to keep our school safe and functioning, which includes dealing with discipline and consequences. But I also hope that they, and you, the teachers and parents, see me as a sounding board, a problem solver, and a fellow teacher. Student learning should be at the center of every decision I make. As I, in concert with my colleagues and SBMC, work to create a sustainable budget for next year, as well as a new master schedule, I sometimes feel a bit removed from what we are really all about the students. And on the days I start to feel that way, I am so invigorated when I visit a classroom. Just this week, I got to see a pollination lesson using virtual reality headsets in 5 th grade, watch an authentic Indian dance performed by a beautiful 2 nd grade student, and hear a child say, I m really starting to like math! in a 4 th grade room. Those moments, when I get to see the incredible teaching and learning in our school, make me so proud to be our principal. ~Dr. Mac~ Explore Enrichment! Announcing Explore Enrichment!
