There is growing awareness of an increase in incidence of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This directed project was designed to determine baseline knowledge of public health nurses on MRSA and to measure effectiveness of an educational intervention for health nurses who were graduate students at a large southern California metropolitan university. Effectiveness was measured by an instrument developed by the researcher, using inferential statistics. Pretest results revealed a relatively low baseline level of knowledge on MRSA and preventative measures. Posttest results indicated a statistically significant increase in participants' scores, t = 6.743, p =.00, indicating an increase in their knowledge on MRSA after the educational session (pretest 62.5% versus posttest 83.3%). It was concluded that the educational intervention was effective in increasing public health nurses' knowledge of MRSA and preventative measures.
