Thisvolume continues to advance the series’mission of disseminating informationabout the technology.Nondestructive testing contributes topublic safety and to our quality of life incountless ways. The technology has madepossible those advances in technologythat are the hallmark of this turn of thecentury.Technology typically relies on thingsthat can be counted, on numbers — onmeasurements and data that can bequantified, processed and stored bycomputer. In such an age, liquidpenetrant testing occupies a special placebecause it is a qualitative method that hasdefied quantification. At the same time, the method remains extremely sensitive, reliable, cost effective and useful toindustry. Because liquid penetrant testingrelies so much on the training andexperience of the human inspector, anauthoritative handbook is especiallyimportant.ASNT has been fortunate that theTechnical Council’s Penetrant Committeeis superbly qualified to provide theexpertise needed to rewrite and review abook of such importance and scope. Thecollaboration between the volunteers andstaff in the writing and review of thisvolume has made productive use of ASNT’s volunteer resources. Scores of authors and reviewers have donatedthousands of hours to this volume.  Liquid Penetrant Testing  was producedunder the guidance of ASNT’s HandbookDevelopment Committee. A special noteof thanks is extended to HandbookDevelopment Director Gary Workman; torecent Penetrant Committee ChairsWilliamE. Mooz, Vilma G. Holmgren,Brian MacCracken and Michael L. White;to Technical Editor Noel A. Tracy; and toHandbook Editor Patrick Moore for theirdedicated efforts. The existence of  Liquid Penetrant Testing  is testimony to the commitment of theAmerican Society for NondestructiveTesting (ASNT) to its missions of providing technical information andinstructional materials and of promotingnondestructive testing technology as aprofession.Robert E.
