1 AccessAbility Services Alternative Format Supplemental Resource Guide AccessAbility Services strives to make the accommodation request and fulfillment process as clear and user-friendly as possible. We also promote independence and learning strategies that will extend beyond your time at Mount Holyoke College. Therefore, this guide serves as a collection of additional resources for students who use the Alternative Format accommodation. There are several self-service options available for obtaining reading materials in various digital formats. You may contact Emily Dean, the Technology Access Coordinator, ) if you need assistance using any of these self-service options. Using these options does not preclude you from obtaining further assistance and support from AccessAbility Services. Alternative Text Resources for Students: While AccessAbility Services provides textbooks and electronic readings in alternative format, we encourage students to take advantage of the additional resources listed below. Bookshare Website: Membership Information: Contact Information: Frequently Asked Questions: Memberships for students with documented disabilities are currently free and are being funded by an award from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Program. Bookshare.org provides free downloadable readers to access their text files. Kurzweil 3000 can also read Bookshare files. AccessAbility Services encourages everyone with a documented print disability to sign up for a free Bookshare membership and can assist with the membership process by providing an activation code or meeting with students to walk through the process. Learning Ally Website: Membership Information https://www.learningally.org/adult-learners/adults-sign-up/ Contact Information: Frequently Asked Questions: https://www.learningally.org/help-and-support/ Mount Holyoke College does not have an institutional membership to Learning Ally but individuals can sign up for memberships. Memberships are unfortunately no longer free. For unlimited access to audiobooks (including thousands of current textbooks) membership is $119/year. That may sound like a lot, but when you add up what you re paying for textbooks each semester it is an extremely cost effective service. You can browse their catalog to see if they have your current textbooks. Learning Ally s audiobooks are read by real people, and can be downloaded with a free app on PCs/Macs, iphones, and ipads. 2 Project Gutenberg Website: Membership Information: Not Required Contact Information: Frequently Asked Questions: No fee or registration is required for access to e-books at the Gutenberg Library. They can be legally downloaded in the United States because their copyrights have expired. The e-books can be found in many formats including rtf, html, mp3, pdf, and doc. Here is a link to their advanced search engine to locate e-books: In this advanced search engine, you can choose what format you would like your e-book in. LibriVox Website: Membership Information: Not required Contact Information: Frequently Asked Questions: LibriVox works exactly like the Gutenberg Library but provides audiobooks. All of the available texts are part of the public domain, meaning their copyrights have expired and therefore can be legally reproduced. National Library Service (NLS) Website: Membership Information: Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers (those with low vision, blindness, or physical impairment) in the United States by postage-free mail. This site provides a search for libraries in specific counties that provide special materials at Audible Website: Contact Information: Frequently Asked Questions: Membership to Audible is not free. However, this site offers many audio books that are compatible with many mobile devices at a fair price. You can sign up for a 30-day free trial through the website. Other resources Online texts, mostly science and math from Colorado University at Science and Math books: University of Penn. online books page at online books-penn state: Free and Low-Cost Document Converters and E-readers: 3 *please ask AccessAbility Services for information on individual licenses of Kurzweil 3000 and Read and Write Gold Robobraille: (www.robobraille.org/web3/mtholyoke) Robobraille is a free, accurate, and safe document conversion tool that Mount Holyoke subscribes too. You upload a file, choose a format, and enter your address. The converted file is ed to you within minutes. Available formats include:.doc,.docx,.pdf,.ppt,.pptx,.txt,.xml,.html,.htm,.rtf,.epub,.mobi,.tiff,.tif,.gif,.jpg,.bmp,.pcx,.dcx,.j2k,.jp2,.jpx,.djv and.asc Scan Tailor - (PC only) FREE Scan Tailor is an interactive post-processing tool for scanned pages. It performs operations such as page splitting, deskewing, adding/removing borders, and others. Prizmo - (MAC only) $49 Prizmo is a user-friendly and reliable solution for Mac users. It integrates state-of-the-art OCR technologies, and supports multipage documents. Adobe Acrobat Professional: Adobe Acrobat is not free of charge but is included on every public computer on the Mount Holyoke campus, including all of the computers in the AT Lab. You can use Adobe Acrobat to edit and recognize text within PDF s using the optical character recognition tool. Mac Speech and Dictate: Mac Speech and Mac Dictate are built-in text-to-speech and dictation functions on newer Mac operating systems. To access Mac Speech and Mac Dictate, find the Dictation and Speech option within the System Preferences menu. Balabolka: Balabolka is a free text-to-speech reader available for PC s. You can also upgrade to a paid version with better voices and an MP3 converter. TextAloud: TextAloud is a low-cost, Windows only (not available for MAC) text-to-speech reader with many of the same functions that Kurzweil 3000 offers, including tracking, MP3 conversion, and reading support. You can purchase TextAloud from NextUp for $29.95 and purchase supplemental voices for an additional cost. There is a free 20-day trial available from their website. VoiceDream - (MAC only) Voice Dream is a Text to Speech app with a wide selection of high quality text-to-speech voices. Text in any of 27 languages can be read out loud at any speed. Chrome Vox - (PC and MAC) FREE Chrome Vox is a Google Chrome plug in. It allows text to seech functionality within the Chrome browser. Make your own flashcards or find flashcards for your topic in the StudyBlue library.
